It&#8217;s part of the Wind Wolves Preserve now. The main trail into the canyon is called El Camino Viejo, the old road. Since reading about Joaquin Murietta (see Avelino post) I&#8217;ve been wondering if this, not the &#8220;Grapevine&#8221; route on I5, is the path he and his bandidos took into Mexico?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The San Joaquin Valley was teeming with wild horses before the Gold Rush and vaqueros made a good living wrangling them and taking them from Alta California down into Mexico. Murietta, apparently did his share of horse trading as well as robbing miners.
