This is looking south into San Emigdio Canyon, about 40 miles south of Bakersfield and 12 miles west of Interstate five. It’s part of the Wind Wolves Preserve now. The main trail into the canyon is called El Camino Viejo, the old road. Since reading about Joaquin Murietta (see Avelino post) I’ve been wondering if this, not the “Grapevine” route on I5, is the path he and his bandidos took into Mexico?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The San Joaquin Valley was teeming with wild horses before the Gold Rush and vaqueros made a good living wrangling them and taking them from Alta California down into Mexico. Murietta, apparently did his share of horse trading as well as robbing miners.
