Canal dinner

I love the color in this photo and the sunlight on the hills. Wish I had a better camera. But only had the iphone when we drove by Sunday, 2.14.21 about 5 p.m. This is the California Aqueduct looking south from Highway 166 south of Mettler.

The old road

This is looking south into San Emigdio Canyon, about 40 miles south of Bakersfield and 12 miles west of Interstate five. It’s part of the Wind Wolves Preserve now. The main trail into the canyon is called El Camino Viejo, the old road. Since reading about Joaquin Murietta (see Avelino post) I’ve been wondering if this, not the “Grapevine” route on I5, is the path he and his bandidos took into Mexico?

The San Joaquin Valley was teeming with wild horses before the Gold Rush and vaqueros made a good living wrangling them and taking them from Alta California down into Mexico. Murietta, apparently did his share of horse trading as well as robbing miners. If this was Murietta’s path, I’m sure the view was the same then as it is now – not bad.
